At a time when the Horn of Africa is witnessing a rise in regional and international alliances and coalitions, the need for greater coordination has become increasingly apparent for countries like Sudan and Eritrea—arguably the weakest at present in terms of power and internal cohesion due to the domestic challenges they both face. This need is especially evident in the recent alliance between Ethiopia and the UAE, where the UAE has taken on the task of meeting Ethiopia’s needs in infrastructure development, in addition to providing logistical, economic, and military support. This alliance is further reinforced by the international backing Ethiopia receives, exemplified by frequent visits from senior officials from the United States, France, and other major powers. In what is believed to be an attempt to counter the growing alliances supporting Ethiopia—amid escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea over access to the sea and Eritrea’s refusal to respond to Ethiopia’s demands—the Eritrean president made a brief, unannounced visit to Sudan. He was received by his Sudanese counterpart, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in a large public procession, underscoring the significance of the visit. The question remains: What can Sudan and Eritrea offer in response to the regional and international alliances supporting Ethiopia? Only time will tell. Contact us: [email protected] في الوقت الذي تشهد فيه منطقة القرن الإفريقي تناميًا في التحالفات والائتلافات الإقليمية والدولية، تبرز الحاجة أمام دول مثل السودان وإريتريا—وهما ربما الأضعف حاليًا من حيث القوة والتماسك الداخلي نتيجة ما يواجهه البلدان من مشكلات داخلية—إلى تنسيقٍ أكبر لمواجهة تلك التحالفات. ويبرز ذلك بشكل خاص في التحالف الأخير بين إثيوبيا والإمارات، حيث تبنت الإمارات تلبية احتياجات إثيوبيا في مجال بناء البنية التحتية، إضافة إلى الدعم اللوجستي والاقتصادي والعسكري. ويعزز هذا التحالف الدعمُ الدولي الذي تتلقاه إثيوبيا، والمتمثل في الزيارات المتكررة التي يقوم بها كبار المسؤولين من الولايات المتحدة وفرنسا وغيرها من الدول الكبرى. وفي إطار ما يُعتقد أنه محاولة لمواجهة تنامي التحالفات الداعمة لإثيوبيا، في ظل تصاعد الصراع بينها وبين إريتريا حول المنفذ البحري ورفض إريتريا التجاوب مع المطالب الإثيوبية، قام الرئيس الإريتري بزيارة خاطفة وغير معلنة إلى السودان. وقد استقبله نظيره السوداني، الفريق عبد الفتاح البرهان، في موكب جماهيري كبير للدلالة على أهمية الزيارة. ويبقى التساؤل: ما الذي يمكن أن يقدمه السودان وإريتريا في مواجهة التحالفين الإقليمي والدولي الداعمين لإثيوبيا؟ هذا ما ستكشف عنه الأيام.
