What are some of the most underrated seaside towns in this country? When most people think of British seaside holidays, places like Brighton, Blackpool, and Bournemouth usually spring to mind. But beyond the spotlight, there’s a whole other world of charming, peaceful, and wildly underrated coastal gems waiting to be discovered. These are the kinds of places where time slows down, fish and chips still taste like a treat, and the seagulls haven’t learned how to steal your lunch (yet). Let’s take a trip around ten of the most underrated seaside towns in the UK—places that might just steal your heart. Ten. Saltburn-by-the-Sea, England Saltburn is one of those places that quietly sticks in your memory. Maybe it’s the elegant Victorian pier, the cliff tramway (the oldest working water-balanced funicular in Britain), or the retro arcades. Or maybe it’s the way the town blends heritage with a modern surf scene, artsy cafés, and coastal walks that could rival any in Cornwall. Nine. Seahouses, England If you’re craving rugged coastline, windswept dunes, and wildlife encounters, Seahouses is your place. This little harbour town in Northumberland is best known as the jumping-off point for boat trips to the Farne Islands, home to puffins, seals, and hundreds of seabirds. But Seahouses itself deserves more love. Eight. Deal, England Deal used to be a sleepy little town, but in recent years it’s become a quiet favourite among Londoners in search of fresh air and excellent seafood. Even so, it’s still considered underrated compared to neighbours like Margate or Whitstable. But that’s starting to change. Seven. Largs, Scotland On the west coast of Scotland, along the Firth of Clyde, lies the quietly beautiful town of Largs. Once a favourite Victorian holiday spot, it still retains its old-school charm with a long seafront promenade, retro amusements, and some of the best ice cream in the country. Six. Lyme Regis, England Known as the “Pearl of Dorset,” Lyme Regis is quietly captivating. Perched on the famous Jurassic Coast, it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site beloved by fossil hunters. But even if you’re not digging for prehistoric creatures, there’s so much to admire here—pastel houses, the curved Cobb harbour wall, and rows of quaint shops selling everything from handmade jewellery to local fudge. Five. Tynemouth, England Just a short Metro ride from Newcastle, Tynemouth feels like a completely different world. It’s where surfboards outnumber selfie sticks, where castle ruins meet café culture, and where the beach is always just a stone’s throw away. Despite being so accessible, Tynemouth is often left out of the UK’s “top seaside town” lists—and that’s a shame. Four. Whitby, England Whitby isn’t exactly unknown, but it still deserves a place on this list for being one of the most uniquely atmospheric seaside towns in the UK. Perched on Yorkshire’s rugged coast, it combines eerie history with raw natural beauty. The ruined Whitby Abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” looms over the town like a gothic guardian. Three. Crail, Scotland On Scotland’s East Neuk of Fife lies the fishing village of Crail—a place so beautiful it feels more like a painting than a real town. Cobbled lanes wind down to a small historic harbour dotted with lobster pots and colourful boats. Stone cottages, some dating back to the 17th century, line the streets. Two. Aberdyfi, Wales On the edge of Snowdonia National Park, where the River Dyfi meets the Irish Sea, you’ll find Aberdyfi—a small village with a big personality. This is where golden sand meets mountain backdrops, and where the pace of life is calm enough to let you hear your own thoughts. One. Southwold, England Tucked away on the Suffolk coast, Southwold is the definition of timeless seaside charm. It’s got everything you'd want from a classic British coastal town—beach huts in soft pastels, a sturdy lighthouse, and one of the quirkiest piers in the UK, complete with whimsical automata and vintage arcade games. ✅ For business inquiries, contact me at [email protected] IMPORTANT INFORMATION This video contains images that were used under a Creative Commons License.
