As a team driver for Alfa Romeo, Enzo Ferrari was a very competitive man on Europe's grand prix tracks prior to the Second World War. His decision to walk away from Alfa Romeo and open his own company, building cars for the race track and the road, quickly paid dividends. By the 1960s the company was already exporting cars in small numbers to markets all around the world, including North America. In Formula One the red cars from Italy posed a formidable threat to rivals, and Ferrari defied even the might of the Ford Motor Company at Le Mans.
