We Like L.A. helps you find the best things to do in Los Angeles! If you like the above hike you might also enjoy our hiking video where we go see the waterfall at Eaton Canyon: • A Hike to the Eaton Canyon Waterfall * * * * In this video we take a quick trip up to Amir's Garden in Griffith Park. Amir's Garden is, really at its heart, the product of a single individual's commitment to loving nature and volunteerism. This 5-acre tree-topped oasis right in the middle of Griffith Park contains dozens of species of plants and trees along with benches to rest, and little nooks and terraces that truly make it feel like a bit of a hidden oasis. Amir's wasn't always here. The terrain had been scorched by fire in 1970 that left the hills in that area of Griffith barren. But where others saw only desolation, Amir saw opportunity. Amir's words, according to the official website's history page: "I said to myself, 'This is really ugly. Somebody ought to build a garden here.' So I said, 'I'll do it' ...and I did." After getting official permission from the city in 1971 Amir began work on cultivating the landscape that would last more than 30 thirty years. While much of the work was by on his own, all by hand, eventually other volunteers started helping and even after his passing in 2003 the garden continues to be managed and cared for by volunteers. The garden, in addition to be a quiet rest spot for park hikers, acts as an important fire break point. Another fascinating part of the garden is that most of the benches and potters planted in the space were built using remnant or found objects that Amir repurposed for his own use. In his own, quiet way, Amir Dialameh left mark on the city of L.A. that continues to endure to this day. Amir's Garden is a remarkable place, and a remarkable story.
