Zakimi jo Castle | UNESCO World Heritage Site | Okinawa | Japan

Our UNESCO World Heritage Site visit took us to Zakimi-jo, or Zakimi Castle. Here, the kings of the Ryukyu Kingdom did their business. This castle was located in the central part of Okinawa. Zakimi castle was built between 1416 and 1422 by General Gosamaru. Dispite its location, this castle helped oversee the northern part of Okinawa Island. The fortress is divided into an inner and outer section, with beautiful stone walls dividing them. Although no castle remains, the area is still very beautiful. Japanese and Americans both took turns occupying the structure during WWII. The place saw a lot of changes during that time, but have been restored as much as possible. You can walk on sections of the wall and visit the museum. The area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 alongside the other castle remains from the Ryukyu Kingdom. CONTEST!
