Family of the Future (FOF) TV spot#1 The Family Planning Communication in Egypt, 1986-1993 الحملة الإعلامية لتنظيم الأسرة في مصر Communication strategy, concept development, script and film direction by Dr. Farag Elkamel الاستراتيجية الإعلامية والفكرة والسيناريو والإخراج/ د. فرج الكامل From 1986 to 1993, Dr. Farag Elkamel planned, developed and produced 55 TV spots addressing family planning knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and skills, in addition to more than 20 other spots promoting contraceptive services. All of these spots were aired daily on national TV channels. This extensive campaign was extremely successful, and resulted in a significant increase in the use of contraceptive methods, which lead to an unparalleled decrease in Egypt’s population growth rate. The rate of population growth decreased by 24.1% and the birth rate decreased by 18.9% during this period. For the first time ever in Egypt’s modern history, the annual population increase dropped. “The annual increase was 1.7 million in 1988 but dropped to 1.4 in 1989 and to 1.3 in 1990.” It should be noted that other campaigns before and after that time period failed to have such an impact, or resulted in having no impact at all (Databank 2020; SRC 2012; Parlato 1988).
