Welcome back to the world of Akhenaten and Nefertiti! Today, we take you on a journey of royal signatures of Akhenaten and Nefertiti that were found in Tell el-Amarna. The cartouche is a type of hieroglyph called a ‘shen’ ring, which means protection. The ancient Egyptians believed it magically protected the person whose name was written inside it. The cartouche is oval in shape with a horizontal line at one end. Several cartouches have been found at Tell el-Amarna with names of Akhenaten, his wife Nefertiti, and the sun god, Aten. Such cartouches symbolised the divine nature of the royal family. Join us as we explore the fragments inscribed with cartouches that are currently housed at the Petrie Museum in London and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
