Public Seminar by Dr Vidushi Sharma SuVi Eye Kota, India Eye Problems in Elderly Population.flv

In this video Dr Vidushi Sharma (MD, AIIMS, New Delhi, India), FRCS (UK), Director, Suvi Eye Institute & Research Center, Kota, India (www.suvieye.com) discuss about common eye diseases in the elderly population during a public seminar organized by Karni Nagar Vikas Samiti, Kota, Rajasthan, India on March 26, 2011 . Speaking in Hindi language, Dr Vidushi explains about three major age-related eye diseases (AREDs) — cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy that affect people after the age of 50 years. CATARACT (MOTIYABIND): The only treatment for a cataract is surgery to remove it. Surgery can now be done at early stage of cataract if you have some difficulty to perform normal activities, such as driving, reading, or looking at computer or video screens, even with glasses. Various types of Intraocular Lenses are available at present. Prevention: The best prevention involves controlling diseases that increase the risk of a cataract, and avoiding exposure to factors known to promote cataract formation. Wearing sunglasses when you are outside during the day can reduce the amount of ultraviolet (UV) light your eyes are exposed to. Some sunglasses do not filter out the harmful UV. Your eye doctor should be able to tell you which sunglasses filter out the most UV. For patients who smoke cigarettes, quitting will decrease the risk of cataracts. GLAUCOMA (KALA PANI): After cataract, glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the India. Tests to diagnose glaucoma include: Gonioscopy (use of a special lens to see the outflow channels of the angle); Tonometry test to measure eye pressure; Optic nerve imaging (photographs of the inside of the eye); Pupillary reflex response; Retinal examination; Slit lamp examination, Visual acuity, Visual field measurement. All these tests are regularly done for glaucoma patients at Suvi Eye Institute, Kota. Treatment: People at high risk for acute glaucoma may opt to undergo iridotomy before having an attack. Patients who have had an acute episode in the past may have the procedure to prevent a recurrence. DIABETIC RETINOPATHY: Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the eye's retina that occurs with long-term diabetes. There are two types, or stages of retinopathy: Nonproliferative or proliferative. Treatment: The following are very important for preventing diabetic retinopathy:Tight control of blood sugar (glucose), blood pressure, and cholesterol; Stopping smoking. People with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy may not need treatment. However, they should be closely followed-up by an eye doctor trained to treat diabetic retinopathy. Laser eye surgery (a facility available at Suvi Eye Institute, Kota, India) creates small burns in the retina where there are abnormal blood vessels. Drugs that prevent abnormal blood vessels from growing, and corticosteroids, Anti-VEGF (AVASTIN, MACUGEN or LUCENTIS) injected into the eyeball are being investigated as new treatments for diabetic retinopathy. Several diabetic patients are benefitted from Laser treatment, vitrectomy operation and Anti-VEGF injection procedures done regularly at Suvi Eye Institute, Kota. Prevention: Tight control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol is very important for preventing diabetic retinopathy. Do not smoke.
