SANTA MONICA, CA — On Monday, May 12, 2025, crews from United Pacific Services, an urban forestry contractor for the City of Santa Monica, carried out the removal of several eucalyptus trees from the Palisades Bluffs overlooking Pacific Coast Highway. The operation was part of the City’s ongoing effort to manage aging and potentially hazardous trees in its urban forest inventory. Working under the supervision of the City’s Public Landscape Division, arborists and equipment operators were seen high atop the coastal cliffs, carefully dismantling the towering non-native trees that have long lined the bluffs. Large sections of trunk and limbs were methodically lowered by crane to minimize environmental disruption and maintain safety along the busy PCH corridor below. The eucalyptus removals are linked to broader municipal goals to maintain public safety, promote ecological resilience, and revitalize the aging canopy. Many of the existing trees on the bluffs are mature and showing signs of decline, with dry conditions and pest susceptibility increasing the risk of limb failure or collapse—particularly during high wind events. City officials note that while tree removal is always a last resort, it is sometimes necessary to ensure the long-term health of the urban forest and the safety of residents, pedestrians, and commuters. The eucalyptus will be replaced with climate-appropriate and structurally sound species as part of Santa Monica’s Urban Forest Master Plan, which emphasizes species diversity and sustainable management practices in the face of ongoing drought and environmental stressors.
