On the night of June 5-6, 1944, 5,000 American and British paratroopers, constituting the first wave of the landing, were airdropped into Normandy. Their mission: to secure the landing of the American ground infantry on Utah Beach, open the roads so that the soldiers could quickly penetrate inland and destroy the enemy defenses. Nothing would go as planned and yet, this mission was the first major airborne mission ever carried out and successful in the Second World War.
