Steven Philpott Jr., Graduate Environmental Biology Researcher Chicago State University 2023 Cornell University Hemp Webinar Series April 19, 2023 Steven Philpott Jr. is a Marine Corps veteran and current environmental biological science graduate researcher exploring the biosynthesis of secondary metabolite production in cannabis plants at Chicago State University. In 2020 when the recreational adult-use of cannabis became legal in Illinois, Steve worked as an inventory manager opening multiple retail stores in Chicago and the Chicagoland area. After seeing first-hand the lack of quality in retail products and inconsistency of testing standards nationally, he decided to pursue a career in cannabis research by enrolling in graduate school. His background and education in human nutrition and plant physiology are the foundations of his diverse experiences throughout the professional cannabis sector. His passion for cannabis research and education lies within his desire to help educate the world about cannabis as a living organism and agricultural commodity and to separate nature's creation from the stigma and misinformation of the War on Drugs. Steve's research captures high-resolution, high-magnification images of the morphological distribution of trichomes using scanning electron microscopy and compares them to cannabinoid concentrations. Former urban agriculture adjunct instructor at City Colleges of Chicago where he led the first cannabis cultivation research trial at a licensed academic institution in the city of Chicago. In addition to his own research, he is also a contributing researcher for the Midwest Hemp Database and Cultivar Check Program. Currently, Steve serves as a scientific advisory board member for the Cannigma, a member of the American Society for Horticultural Science and American Chemical Society, and co-founder of Anzisha consulting.
