In this video, we make an eastbound journey on a London Underground 1973 Stock Piccadilly Line train from Heathrow Terminal 5 to Turnham Green calling at all stations (Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3, Hatton Cross, Hounslow West, Hounslow Central, Hounslow East, Osterley, Boston Manor, Northfields, South Ealing, Acton Town and Turnham Green. Apologies for dropping the camera as my hand caught the neck strap while I was preparing to change position. This video features a moderately rare occasion as the Piccadilly Line only calls at Turnham Green throughout the night and early hours of the morning. Throughout normal daylight hours, the Piccadilly Line usually skips out Turnham Green in addition to all the other stations between Acton Town and Hammersmith. However, this is set to change when upgrades to the Piccadilly Line and the signalling system are finalised will see Turnham Green become a mandatory stop on the line. We run parallel with the District Line from Acton Town onwards and the two lines continue running parallel with each other all the way to South Kensington. The Piccadilly Line is one of four selected tube lines to be given a big upgrade in the future as part of "The New Tube for London" project along with the Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City Line services. This upgrade will see the current rolling stock replaced with brand new trains which are projected to enter service in the early to mid 2020s. The aim is to improve customer service which includes higher operating speeds for faster journeys, higher frequency for reduced waiting time and improvements in efficiency, reliability, safety and capacity. The early concepts estimate that the new trains will increase capacity on the Piccadilly Line alone by approximately 60% but in order to improve safety and reliability, the four lines will see the installation of Platform Edge Door (PED) technology which is currently in use on the Jubilee Line from Westminster to North Greenwich. Out of the four lines, the Piccadilly Line will be the first to receive the new trains. This is unsurprising considering the estimated capacity increase for the line is significantly higher than the other three. One of the main reasons for this is because the Piccadilly Line serves several significant parts of London including Heathrow Airport, King's Cross St Pancras (with a St Pancras International interchange), Kensington (for the museums), Green Park (for Buckingham Palace) and Knightsbridge (for Harrods).
