Laos 🇱🇦 | 4000 Islands 🏝 | Don Khon & Don Det (Pt.1)

The first of a 3 part series covering our 8 day trip to Don Khon & Don Det (4000 Islands) in Laos (which also became our pre-wedding honeymoon*). In this episode we cover the overnight buses (detailed in full in the description below), arrival in Don Khon, floating bungalows (highly recommend), cycling, sightseeing, and sunsets. - - - - - - - - - - - If you enjoyed this video be sure to Like, Comment, Subscribe, & hit that Notification Bell so you don't miss out on future videos. We left Da Nang at around 8am via VIP sleeper bus, crossing the Laos Baos border around lunchtime/early afternoon. While there we had lunch on the Vietnam side (paid ourselves as it wasn't included), then got back on the bus for a few minutes and got off at the physical border crossing to get our visa and stamp. Once we had that we then jumped back on the bus and up to that point it was all plain sailing. When we arrived in Savannakhet during the night however, that's when things started going less smoothly. At the station in Savannakhet Tracey and I (along with a couple of other travelers) were woken up and told we needed to get off the bus and change to another one. Confused and half asleep, we couldn't understand what was going on and then to make matters more concerning he gave us some money for the next bus (which turned out we had to book ourselves). The person at the office there only spoke Laos, so even Tracey couldn't help with translation, though managed to work it out in the end albeit with some guesswork. That whole part was quite disorientating and getting on a normal bus for the next several hours wasn't ideal as we couldn't really sleep. We eventually arrived at one of the bus stations in Pakse at around 3/4am the next day ('8Km Bus terminal' at a guess), and found a hotel just behind the station up the hill to get a few hours sleep. We returned to the bus station s few hours later at around 8/9am and ended up paying to get on what I can only describe as a super local bus (songthaew), though be wary of pricing as we got overcharged quite a bit. We only realized that later though when arranging our return from the island via a proper bus/coach. The songthaew was certainly an interesting experience though. Had to climb over ducks getting in. Then during the 2/3 hour trip various locals would climb in or jump off the sardine packed truck before we finally arrived at the 'Nakasang Ferry Boat Station'. From the Nakasang Ferry Boat Station it's easy enough. You get off the bus and it's essentially just a long road with different local shops selling some food, snacks, clothing, and other tourist stuff. You walk to the end of the road towards to river, then book a boat at the ticket office and wait to board. The boat trip to Don Khon takes around 15 mins and docks at Don Khon just beside 'Pan's Restaurant' & 'Pan's Residence'. *Filmed March 2018
