Genesis 6: Divine beings saw human women, found them beautiful, and took them as wives. Their offspring were giants—warriors of legend. Then God drowned the world. Four verses. That's all we get. But these might be the strangest, most troubling verses in the entire Bible. Who were the "sons of God"? Were they angels? Did celestial beings actually father children with humans? And if so, where was God when heaven's boundary was being violated? 🔍 WHAT THE TEXT SAYS "Sons of God saw daughters of men, that they were beautiful, and took wives for themselves of all whom they chose." Not courted. Not asked. TOOK. Their children: Nephilim (Hebrew: "the fallen ones"). Giants. Mighty men of renown. Next verse: "The Lord saw wickedness was great...every intent of the heart was only evil continually." Then the flood. 📖 THE ANCIENT INTERPRETATION For 1,000+ years, Jewish and early Christian readers understood this literally: angels descended and had sexual relations with human women. Evidence: • "Sons of God" in Job = angelic beings before God's throne • Jude 6: Angels "left their own abode" (abandoned proper place) • 2 Peter 2: Angels "cast down to Tartarus in chains" • Book of Enoch (quoted by Jude): 200 angels called Watchers descended on Mt. Hermon, swore oath, took women, produced giants ⚠️ THE HORRIFYING IMPLICATIONS God created angels with capacity for sexual desire toward humans—that's design, not accident. 200 angels coordinated this descent. God let it happen. For YEARS. Long enough for pregnancies, births, children growing to adulthood, giants terrorizing humanity. The language: "Took wives of all whom they chose." No consent mentioned. No women's choice. Multiple partners. God's response: Let it continue for years, THEN drown everyone—including assault victims, their children, infants, pregnant women. Eight people survive. Millions die. Question: If God is omniscient, He knew when creating angels that some would fall, corrupt humanity, require a flood killing millions. He made them anyway. Why? 🤔 THE ALTERNATIVE INTERPRETATIONS Sethite Theory (Augustine, 5th century): "Sons of God" = godly line of Seth, "daughters of men" = Cain's line. Sin = believers marrying unbelievers. Problem: Why would their children be giants? Godly men + ungodly women = ordinary children, not legendary warriors. Rulers Theory: "Sons of God" = kings/tyrants taking multiple wives. Same problem: Tyrants produce ordinary children. Nothing explains Nephilim. Truth: Sethite interpretation invented because Augustine was uncomfortable with angels having physical bodies. Not because it fit the text better—because the angelic reading was theologically inconvenient. 💥 THE PROBLEM THAT DESTROYS EVERYTHING Genesis 6:4: "There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward." Afterward. Post-flood. Numbers 13: Israelite spies report seeing Nephilim in Promised Land. Goliath descended from giants. King Og's bed was 13 feet long. If flood destroyed Nephilim, where did these come from? Three possibilities (all devastating): 1. Angels repeated transgression post-flood (God's solution failed) 2. Nephilim genetics survived through Noah's family (contamination survived the cleansing) 3. Nephilim" in Numbers = just tall people, unrelated to Genesis (story isn't literal) God's solution failed. Or contamination survived. Or it's mythological language. Pick one. 📚 WHAT THIS REVEALS Genesis isn't the only ancient flood story. Epic of Gilgamesh (written before Genesis) has one. Atra-Hasis has one. Multiple Mesopotamian cultures do. Genesis might be adapting/reinterpreting older stories with Israelite theology. Making them about Yahweh instead of Mesopotamian gods. Question: Literal history or theological narrative using legendary material? Ancient readers didn't have our literal vs. metaphorical anxieties. Modern fundamentalism's "total literal truth or total dismissal" is recent, not how ancients approached texts. Questions remain: • What God creates angels capable of this rebellion? • What God allows corruption for years before intervening? • What God's solution drowns victims with perpetrators? • What God's solution doesn't actually solve the problem? We can defend every detail, or be honest: This is deeply strange, deeply troubling. It portrays God making decisions hard to reconcile with NT's loving father. We honor Scripture by sitting with difficulties, not explaining them away. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 - The Story Sunday School Skipped 0:45 - The Text (Four Verses) 2:30 - What This Appears to Say 5:00 - The Horrifying Implications 7:30 - The Uncomfortable Alternatives 9:00 - The Problem That Destroys Everything 10:00 - What This Reveals 11:00 - Your Thoughts?
