Old School Map Making

In the pre-computer software days of making maps for Dungeon and Dragons, GM's used hex sheets to create the continents of their world. These hexes created a scale and means of tracking movements as players explored these worlds for treasure and renown. With computer maps these hexes have sometimes fallen by the wayside, with GM's either handing out complete maps to players or using theatre of the mind to chart a groups movement. In this video I use the Wonderdraft software package to demonstrate how you can meld the functionality and aesthetic quality of software with the game advantages of traditional hex sheets. I use a six mile hex scale to create a campaign style map. By keeping the hex grid on the map as I create the land masses and terrain features, I'm always aware of distances between these features, the difficulty of travel, and how the various settlements facilitate travel. I also create a detail map that the players can use to chart their progress through the world.
