On July 12-13, the Office of the United Nations President of the General Assembly (PGA) hosted the High Level Thematic Debate on Human Rights. At the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development lies a demand for a stronger focus on human rights across all aspects of society. The event took place in the context of the 50th anniversary of the International Human Rights Covenants, the 30th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development and the process to select and appoint the next United Nations Secretary-General. High-level representatives from States, the UN-system, regional organisations, human rights bodies and mechanisms, civil society, think tanks and private sector participated in the event. UN-NGLS facilitated an open, transparent and participatory process with a civil society Selection Committee to identify 2 civil society speakers for this event, including the one for the opening session. The civil society selection Committee created a short-list of candidates from among hundreds of applicants to provide to the President of the General Assembly. The President of the General Assembly selected Agnes Leina Ntikaampi, the Executive Director and Founder of Il'laramatak Community Concerns, to serve as the Civil Society speaker for the opening session of the event.
