As I created my blog on the Adoration of Hiroshima Mas by Peter Minshall, I searched for footage that would truly capture the depth and scope of the Madame Hiroshima experience. Read my blog here: https://experiencegrace.info/adoration-of-... This video is a tribute to all those who have passed away but are still present on tape, and who will forever live on in our memories. I cannot express enough how profoundly transformative the experience of witnessing The Adoration of Hiroshima Mas in Washington DC was for me. My words feel inadequate in describing the catharsis it brought to my life. Peter Minshall is a Trinidadian artist and carnival designer who is renowned for his innovative and striking depictions of Mas (short for Masquerade), a tradition that is celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago during the Carnival season. One of his most notable works is his depiction of Madame Hiroshima, which he created for the 1983 Trinidad and Tobago Carnival. Madame Hiroshima was Minshall's interpretation of the devastating impact of the atomic bomb that was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima during World War II. Minshall's presentation of Madame Hiroshima was a powerful statement about the dangers of nuclear weapons and the need for peace in the world. The Mas was a haunting and unforgettable image that captured the attention of audiences both in Trinidad and Tobago and around the world. Here is an excerpt https://www.facebook.com/santimanitaygame/... The History of the Hiroshima character -- 'This time the character was called “The Adoration of Hiroshima,” and of course she was part of The Princes of Darkness. In this version, also played by Bote, the mas character is a perversion of a religious icon, with a grinning skull-like face, reminiscent of a Bali devil mask; a golden halo of exploding rays; and, again, prom The character holdsa missile-shaped scepter in one hand and a blue-green globe of Earth in the other. The mushroom cloud of ostrich feathers is pure white. (Part of the reason for the transformation is Minshall’s realization, upon looking back at the archival photos, that the mushroom cloud from a nuclear bomb explosion is not, in fact, fiery, but white.) The essence of this version of the character is to depict how nuclear power is worshipped as godlike. It is this second version, the one that was presented as part of The Golden Calabash in T&T Carnival 1985, that was the centerpiece of the processional maspresentation “The Adoration of Hiroshima” that was part of the peace protest march in Washington DC on the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima in August 1985.
