SC allows passive euthanasia for 31-year-old man in coma for over 12 years

The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed passive euthanasia for a 31-year-old man who has been in a coma for more than 12 years after suffering severe head injuries in a fall in 2013. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Viswanathan permitted the withdrawal of artificial life support for Harish Rana, directing AIIMS Delhi to admit him to palliative care so the process can be carried out with dignity. The court relied on medical reports from primary and secondary medical boards which indicated negligible chances of recovery.
