The 2024 GWM Tank 500 Hybrid has finally arrived in Australia, where it's looking to make the all-conquering Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series SUV's life a misery by offering a similar number of 4WD thrills for a fraction of the price. Yep, this new Chinese contender means serious business. While it has the expected ladder-frame chassis and four-wheel-drive system with high and low range, the Tank 500 does set itself apart with a 'self-charging' hybrid powertrain, which combines a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for combined outputs of 255kW of power and 648Nm of torque. But is there more to the Tank 500 Hybrid than being more powerful than the LC300 on paper?
