Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to J Chavez :) Uy! Andy ang akon ngalan. Kamusta ka? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Hiligaynon language. The Hiligaynon language, is an Austronesian language spoken primarily in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, particularly in the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, and Capiz. It is also spoken in parts of Mindanao due to migration. Hiligaynon belongs to the Visayan language family and shares similarities with other Visayan languages like Cebuano and Waray, but it remains distinct in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. It is widely spoken by over 7 million people as a native language, and more than 4 million as a second language. Hiligaynon is not only used in daily conversation but also in literature, radio, and TV broadcasting, keeping it vital in contemporary Filipino culture. The Hiligaynon people, often referred to as Ilonggo, are predominantly from Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, Capiz, and parts of Mindanao due to migration. Known for their warmth, hospitality, and gentleness, they are primarily engaged in agriculture, especially in the cultivation of rice, sugarcane, and other crops. Their society is family-oriented, and their social interactions emphasize respect, with a strong adherence to traditional values. Many Hiligaynons are Roman Catholics, with religious festivals like the Dinagyang in Iloilo City and MassKara in Bacolod City being major cultural events. These festivals showcase their vibrant traditions through music, dance, and costumes, reflecting their deep connection to both Catholicism and indigenous practices. Hiligaynon culture is a blend of indigenous traditions and Spanish colonial influences. Their religious practices, arts, and celebrations often center around Catholicism, with annual festivals and processions forming an integral part of community life. Traditional crafts, such as weaving and pottery, are still practiced, with modern adaptations. Hiligaynon cuisine is also notable, featuring dishes like batchoy, inasal and kansi. Family gatherings and community events are central to the culture, often marked by music, dance, and food sharing, reflecting the social and communal values that are deeply embedded in Hiligaynon society.
