The complications could be immediate complications or delayed complications. The immediate complications after Liver transplantation surgery would be bleeding. Once the patient is shifted back to the ICU the patient can have bleeding because sometimes the liver takes a while to start functioning. So there is still coagulopathy. That means the blood is still thin and the bleeding chances are there. The second could be infections, which is some of the major complications that we see post transplantation because of immunosuppression and this infections can be milder form of infection or severe forms of infections and the infections are usually treatable and we try treat them with antibiotics. The other complications are biliary complications in the form of leak, which could be early complications or it can be a stricture, which can be a delayed complications. The other complications of Liver transplantation is there could be primary non-functioning of the liver. That means the liver that is transplanted may not function. This is more common in patients who undergo cadaver transplantation and the primary non function means the liver is not functioning in the new individual. So it a liver failure that happens. The other complications can be wound infections can be treated with dressing or antibiotics. The delayed complications that we can see post transplantation is also infectiosn.it could be infections in different forms, viral infections the milder form of infection can also be severe in these individuals because of immunosuppression. The immunosuppression That we given can cause so sometimes complications in these individuals, that is the CNI’s that we use or the immunosuppressants that we use can cause some neurotoxicity. That means they can develop, seizures or they can develop tremors. The tremors can be milder form, but done people have seizures, which are milder form. Other complications due to medication would be renal toxicity. That means the kidney starts getting affected. Especially we see them in patients wo have some amount of kidney damage or in a delayed for due to long term use of these medications they can have renal injury. Other complications are they have these viral infections. It can be HSV infections, CMV infections, the fungal infection they can develop or in some people due to long term immunosuppressant they can develop cancers like skin cancers or lymphomas developed. The other complications that we see are diabetes which can be persistent or patients who have diabetes already can have worsening of their diabetes because of these medications so generally we call them as metabolic syndrome where patients put on weight if they do not have good lifestyle modification. They can have hypotension, blood pressure. They a have deranged lipid profile, these are all the complications induced. So these can be controlled if the patient has a good lifestyle or if they have a healthy living or if they do exercises or if they control their dietary habits. The medications themselves can be adjusted by the doctor so that if there is a complication, there is a reduction in the levels of the medications that we give, or we introduce newer medications. So these are generally treatable complications of the medications that we see.
