Soprano Jenny Sandelin, baritone José Adán Pérez, and bass Steven Moore sing scenes from the second act of Thea Musgrave's 1977 opera 'Mary, Queen of Scots' at the composer's 90th birthday concert in New York. Jenny Sanderlin, soprano José Adán Pérez, baritone Steven Moore, bass Michael Fennelly, piano The New York Virtuoso Singers Harold Rosenbaum, conductor The Church of St Mary the Virgin, New York | 27 May 2018 PROGRAMME NOTE Mary, Catholic Queen of Scotland and widowed Queen of France, has been invited by the Protestant Lords to return and assume the Scottish crown. The opera concentrates on half-brother, James Stewart. Mary’s personality is expressed through the different situations in which she finds herself – her marriage to Darnley; her stormy relationship with Bothwell; and her confrontation with her brother. In each she vies with the other to win the favour of the Lords of the Council and the allegiance of the people so as to have ultimate power and control. It is a struggle to the death. 'Mary, Queen of Scots' was commissioned by Scottish Opera and received its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1977, conducted by the composer. FULL OPERA RECORDING A live recording of the US premiere (1978) has been re-released on Lyrita Recording Edition and is available at chandos.net, Spotify and Amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Musgrave-Que... ____________ For more information about Mary, Queen of Scots click here: http://musicsalesclassical.com/compos...
