It looks like a striking Island, such a spectacular place in our country. The Ramkot Fort is one of the best tourist places near the River Jhelum in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK). It's an awesome, elegant, historical, and peaceful place strongly recommended for visit. There is a short steep climb uphill with 440 stairs to reach the fort. Three sides of the fort are surrounded by the Jhelum River which falls into the huge reservoir of Mangla Dam. The view of the blue water from the fort is worth seeing. It looks like water is protecting it. Due to its unique construction, it is a bit different from the rest. There is only one entrance to this fort. Other than that there is no gate to the fort from where you can enter. The fort has a strong fortified wall, several buildings, ramps, basements, and 2 ponds inside the fort, one of which was used for drinking water and the other for bathing. The fossils of the fort remind us of its greatness. Standing on the top of the fort, all the surrounding views such as mountains, greenery, and blue water are truly amazing. There are so many myths about the construction of Ramkot Fort. Ramkot Fort was constructed in 1186 during the Ghurid dynasty by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din, according to the information board at the entrance. However, the current structure probably dates to the 16th century. A temple with a large red Shivalinga, brought from the Ganges River, suggests a significant Hindu population once resided in the area. The presence of Hindu mythological figure Ram Chandra's birthplace in nearby Pharwala may explain the fort's name. However, British geologist and historian Frederick Drew attributes the fort's construction to a Gakhar named Taghlu, contradicting the information board. The fort underwent renovation during the reign of Gakhar Queen Mango, whose daughter married Aurangzeb Alamgir's son. During the Sikh era, the fort was handed over to the Dogras. Ramkot Fort held strategic importance, as one of the four ancient routes to Srinagar passed through it. The area is also significant for being the birthplace of Ram Chandra in 1500 BC and, much later, Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, author of Saif-ul-Malook. It was built over the site of an ancient Hindu Shiva temple because Excavations at the fort have discovered the remains of a Hindu temple and relics from the 5th and the 9th centuries AD. But some believe that the Fort was constructed around the 16-17th century AD when Mughal emperor Akbar's visit Kashmir to protect the area around old Mirpur. It has been attacked many times and earthquakes have come and gone, but till today, despite being so high, it stands on its strong foundations. Follow us on: Facebook: / . .
