It was a beautiful morning at Taiaroa Head and SSTrig was just at the base of the hill and South Plateau chick was sitting on the grass preening. SSTrig decides to come over and say hello to her neighbor. They have a few minutes of cordial behavior - then SP gets up and begins to display his wings, whistle, skycalling and bill clappering. These moves are common in juvenile albatross that have returned to the colony after being at sea for at least 5 years when they want to find a mate. But for these young chicks, it is simply posturing and practice. SStrig does not seem impressed but SP continues and SStrig begins to retreat a little to her nest. After several minutes of displays, SP continues to advance towards SSTrig who at that point retreated down the hill a little ways. SP seemingly was confident he has the whole grass top of hill to himself but SSTrig returns. She stands her ground and defends her nest. SP turns around and heads back to the cam and hang out there with that handsome reflection shining back at him lol SSTrig did a pretty good job defending her nest considering she had never encountered this type of dominant behavior from a neighbor. Thank you for watching!
