I just got the excellent Microcosm pedal by Hologram Electronics. I sounds amazing and can do so much. This is just a quick test with the very first sounds I made with it. Imagine an unboxing video but about getting excited at the sounds that come out of a new piece of gear instead how well some tech thing is packed. The Microcosm is a granular effects pedal. It uses sampling, pitch-shifting, delay, and looping techniques to rearrange any audio you feed into it. At first use it feels like a beefed up Count to Five pedal by Montreal Assembly (one of my favorite and most used pieces). But they can both do quite different things. Also, Microcosm is stereo outs and four really lush reverbs built in. It is easy to sync tempos with your beats and arpeggiators via midi as well. Both pedals rule though. For this first test I ran an old microKorg XL synth through it. I think it is a patch I made, but I can’t remember for sure. It was called belltone. I think it was just a sine tone with a hint of an lfo on the decay. The knobs broke so I can’t see how I patched it anymore : ) Running it through the microcosm added a real sense of space and movement behind the melody. It played re-pitched grains based off of the notes from the keyboard. The reverb sounds are really pretty too. Maybe something akin to a Big Sky or Blue Sky pedal. It feels like some of the ambient settings on our Specular Tempus pedal too. I also added a bit of subtle tape loop as well. Halfway just because it looks cool if I’m being honest. But it did give a hint of texture to the track. I’m looking forward to exploring more with this pedal. I got so lost in it today I forgot to eat lunch. And that is always a good sign!
