If you are anxious to try using food in helping your horse learn, it might be because your horse misbehaves when he knows you have food. This is usually because we have accidentally rewarded unruly behaviors by feeding treats at the wrong time and in the wrong way. We then inadvertently train our horses to have bad food “manners”. Since horses don’t subscribe to our cultural norms around eating, they just do what works. Horse: I nibbled your coat, you fed me a treat. I nuzzled your pocket, you fed me a treat. Mugging the human means the human will dispense food. Let’s fix this with positive reinforcement by teaching the horse what we want them to do instead. Points to remember with equine learners: 1) feed from flat open palm 2) feed a generous amount (you can sometimes use their good behavior while chewing as an opportunity to reward again 3) feed at arms length 4) reward the slightest tries at first 5) keep sessions short; 2 minutes at a time is best 6)when starting a new session always review the easiest task from the session before - don’t start at the point to which you progressed in the last session
