I took this opportunity to document the work that went into transforming the lives of these children born with cleft palate or cleft lip. This condition is typically due to malnutrition and lack of folic acid within the first 6 weeks of conception as folic acid is needed for the palate or upper lip to fuse together. It was transformative to see the light shines in the eyes of the parents after the surgery. They see a future for their children (like school, love, marriage, family) instead of a societal stigma as being the work of the devil. The cost is roughly $225 per surgery (logistics, transport, securities with volunteer physicians, nurses, specialists and surgical supplies and equipment donated by my employer). Due to privacy concerns, I cannot post photos of the Peruvian children, only those approved by Operation Smiles (photos at the end).
