ANNAHAR NEWSPAPER - THE NEW PRESIDENT (Case Study) | Campaign 1. Background Lebanon has long faced political instability, marked by recurring leadership vacuums that paralyze progress. In 2022, the country endured over two years without a president, as 13 parliamentary sessions failed to reach a consensus. Against this backdrop, AnNahar, Lebanon’s most trusted and long-standing newspaper, recognized an urgent need for innovative solutions that could break the cycle of stagnation. For nearly a century, AnNahar has served as a beacon of unbiased journalism, holding leaders accountable and championing the public interest. The "AI President" campaign was born out of this legacy—an unprecedented initiative to reimagine leadership through the power of generative AI. By digitizing 90 years of independent reporting, AnNahar created a rational, context-aware entity capable of proposing solutions to Lebanon’s most pressing challenges. This campaign wasn’t just a creative exercise; it was a cultural intervention. In a region where trust in institutions is often low, the AI President became a unifying symbol of hope, reflecting the Lebanese people's aspirations for impartial and effective governance. It also demonstrated AnNahar's enduring commitment to innovation and national progress. The campaign launched at a critical moment, addressing Lebanon’s leadership crisis while showcasing the transformative potential of technology. By leveraging its journalistic heritage to drive political discourse, AnNahar positioned itself as more than a media outlet—it became a catalyst for change in a country yearning for reform. 2. Creative Idea Lebanon faced a leadership crisis, with no elected president for over two years. To prove that rational, unbiased leadership was possible, AnNahar created The AI President—the world’s first AI-driven head of state, trained on 90 years of independent journalism. Using OCR and machine learning, every edition of AnNahar was digitized, creating a context-aware AI model capable of analyzing historical patterns and providing real-time solutions to Lebanon’s governance challenges. Users could ask policy questions, and the AI President responded with data-driven insights, delivered in both Arabic and English through custom AI-generated voice and dynamic visuals. Beyond digital engagement, the AI President became a real-world influence, attending cabinet meetings and shaping policy discussions. The campaign not only revolutionized data storytelling but also redefined the role of AI in governance, making a powerful statement on how technology and journalism can drive change. 3. Insights & Strategy We set out to demonstrate the value of AnNahar's 90 years of impartial reporting in building a fair and democratic state. But also to make a poignant point to the Lebanese and the political elite: leading Lebanon rationally and objectively is completely possible, when decisions are highly-informed by country’s past and completely unencumbered by political affiliation and personal biases. Our strategy was not just to say this, which as a newspaper we have many times, but to prove it to Lebanon and the world. So we took an innovative and tech-based approach, creating the AI President of Lebanon, trained on 90 years of impartial reporting and the ability to analyze it against current events to provide informed, objective and rational policies. 4. Execution To build the AI President, we trained the generative AI system with every past edition of AnNahar dating back 90 years. The AI President exists on a website that anyone can access. We teased the arrival of a new leader to the Lebanese public through a nationwide campaign across outdoor, TV, and social platforms, keeping the identity hidden. The AI President was revealed in a nationwide broadcast, with a live interview with the Editor-in-Chief of AnNahar. Answering in-depth questions on Lebanon’s situation, the AI President effectively showcased its unbiased and data-driven pragmatic solutions to the country's political deadlock and myriad of problems. AnNahar then transformed its daily edition into a full-fledged political platform, authored by the AI President – containing informed solutions and policies to reform Lebanon and urging citizens to access its wealth of knowledge online and ask questions, facilitating an informed and country-wide dialogue. 5. Results The AI President campaign had an unprecedented impact, proving that rational, unbiased leadership was possible in Lebanon. Over-achieving on brand metrics, it generated 100,000+ responses, trended across social media, and increased AnNahar’s website traffic by 31%. The campaign changed behavior by transforming political discourse, encouraging citizens to engage with governance solutions.
