Drone shot :- @ThakurMMSingh GULABGHAR ( Padder ) - Base Camp of Machail Yatra and Historical Town Of Jammu and Kashmir Gulabgarh, the central place of Paddar block, has a history intertwined with religious and cultural shifts. Originally known as Chattergarh, it was renamed Gulabgarh in the 1830s by General Zorawar Singh in honor of Raja Gulab Singh of Jammu. The area saw the settlement of various groups, including Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims, with the Buddhists historically inhabiting the upper reaches and some settling in Gulabgarh. Muslims arrived later, primarily from Kishtwar, and established themselves in the lower areas of the valley. The region also holds remnants of ancient settlements, with some carvings attributed to the Pandavas, linking it to Vedic and epic lore. Here's a more detailed look at the history: Early Inhabitants and Serpent Worship: Ancient Paddar was primarily inhabited by Hindus who also practiced serpent worship alongside other Hindu rites and rituals. Buddhist Presence: Buddhists migrated from regions like Ladakh and Zanskar, settling in the upper reaches of the valley, including the Machail, Kaban, and Gandhari areas, as well as in Gulabgarh. Muslim Arrival: Muslims began settling in Paddar around 60 years ago, primarily from Kishtwar, and are now found in the lower reaches of the valley. Name Change: The village was initially called Chattergarh. General Zorawar Singh renamed it Gulabgarh to honor Raja Gulab Singh. Ancient Settlements and Carvings: The valley contains remnants of ancient settlements, including springs with stone carvings and trailside engravings, with some attributed to the Pandavas from the Vedic and epic periods. Machail Temple: The Machail Mata Temple, with its five-century history, is a significant landmark, its construction linked to a vision of Desrajji's ancestors. Cultural Exchange: Cultural exchange, particularly with Zanskar, has been a constant feature of Paddar's history, with intermarriages and trade contributing to the rich cultural tapestry.
