Large southern Sunbelt cities like Houston are home to millions and continuing to grow. While growth can be vibrant and exciting, its adverse effects include sprawl, segregation, and inequity. As a Houston resident, Aaron Flores has witnessed many of the problems that have become intrinsic to urban growth. And yet, when Hurricane Harvey brought these inequities into stark relief, he also witnessed the phenomenal reaction of people working together and helping their neighbors. Aaron’s talk shows that we don’t have to wait for a crisis to come together and encourages individuals to step out of their bubbles and become urbanists and community organizers, see their neighbors, and work together to build authentic communities from within. Aaron is a graduate of Austin College with a major in International Relations with a minor in French. He is now a real estate and communications professional and full-time volunteer based in Houston. He served on Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s transition team on public health policy and quality of life and was an inaugural appointee to the mayor’s LGBTQ Advisory Board. Aaron is the editor of The Heights, a local publication for the Houston Heights Association. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
