The ubiquitous presence of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in a number of consumer products and in all environmental compartments is demanding the development of new analytical techniques able to meet the request in terms of detection, characterization and size determination at very low concentrations. In this context, Single Particle (SP)-ICP-MS has become a very useful tool for the characterization of individual nanoparticles in a variety of complex samples. SP-ICP-MS is able to provide the following information after very short (few minutes) measurements: the presence of nanoparticles and/or dissolved species of the same element in a nanoparticle suspension, the nanoparticle number concentration and mass concentration, the mass of the element per particle, and the nanoparticle size. This webinar will summarize the development of the technique since its early beginnings in the ‘90s of the last century, and will discuss the theoretical and practical aspects that need to be take into account in order to obtain reliable data. The second part of the webinar will focus on the most important applications of the technique in different fields, including the most recent ones for the analysis of micron and sub-micron plastic particles. The strengths and limitations, from a critical point of view, as well as the future directions of the technique, will also be discussed.
