Social polarization in the United States and in many other countries is at an all-time high. What can we do about it? This talk highlights current research on the causes of polarization, suggesting that one of the best ways to reduce polarization is by learning how to talk—and listen—to people we disagree with. The presentation will highlight a number of techniques drawn from mediation and conflict resolution that can lead to better dialogues among people with divergent perspectives on important issues. Kirk Hawkins is a Professor of Political Science at Brigham Young University. He teaches courses in comparative politics, specializing in Latin American politics. He is the director of Team Populism, a global scholarly network studying the causes and consequences of populist attitudes and political movements. His current research focuses on how to reduce populism’s polarizing consequences for society. Part of our winter 2023 lecture series, "Building a Civil Society."
