In the mid-1840s, the Dousman family began developing an estate on the banks of the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien that would evolve into Villa Louis. The immaculately decorated mansion is one of the best restoration examples in the country. The mansion's collection of decorative arts is continually changing based on the current season or special event. A visit includes a costumed interpreter-led tour of the house, Wisconsin's sole 1812 battlefield, the historic remains of the site's original structure, Fort Crawford, and a National Landmark fur trade museum.
