On the Death of Anne Bronte' by Charlotte Bronte English Summary : On the Death of Anne Bronte is a short four stanza poem composed of sets of four lines or quatrains, following the rhyme scheme ABAB CDCD DADA DEDE. The poem is characterised by a well- considered and even-feeling tone that balances the speaker's grief. Charlotte Bronte describes her numb feeling, owing to the death of Anne Bronte, in the beginning of the poem. She has lost all the strong emotions of her life- she does not feel joy nor fear at death. The poet longed to see her sister dead because the end stages of her disease of tuberculosis were painful for both the sufferer and the onlookers. The speaker conceives God's choice to take Anne's life as she will be parted from her 'darling'. At the same time, it is an act of mercy given to Anne's misery. Anne Bronte is referred to as the 'hope and glory of our life'. Charlotte Bronte asserts that their future is not bright without Anne by their side and that she no longer has her closest companion to share the troubles of the world. Charlotte Bronte, following the demise of her youngest sister Anne Bronte, confides to the readers her mental state. She has hardly any reason to be happy and she has reached a point in her life where she is no longer afraid of death. Being physically present at the time of Anne's death, Charlotte claims that if her possibility of dying would have saved her sister's life, she would have ventured for it. However, no such prospect was open before her. She actively wished that Anne would breathe her last soon, though she was aware of the absurdity and awfulness of wishing for one's own sister's death. Charlotte was assured of the fact that Anne was beyond help and that the only respite she was going to receive was that in death. Though Charlotte may want to chase away death and keep the soon-to-be deceased alive forever she knows she cannot. In the last moments of Anne, the poet realises how much pain her loved one is in and that wishing her to live another day would be selfish and an unjustified punishment. Charlotte comes to terms with the gravity of her loss and thanks God for liberating Anne from her pangs. Thanking God fits the Bronte siblings' upbringing with their clergyman father. Within a span of ten months, Charlotte Bronte lost three siblings, culminating with Anne's death. Tuberculosis epidemic ( during 18th and 19th century tuberculosis was considered as an epidemic) killed first her brother Patrick Branwell, then her sister Emily Bronte before Anne lingered with it for about five months. Unlike Branwell and Emily, Anne tried to fight as hard as she could to overcome the advanced stages of tuberculosis through the medications and pieces of advice available to her at the time, rather than succumb to the devastating disease. Opening lines allude to Anne's final visit to Scarborough - a place where she had spent many holidays with Charlotte and their lifelong friend, Ellen Nussey. Initially, they made the trip because Anne was feeling slightly better and was hoping that a change of scenery would initiate a possible recovery. But after a few days, Anne's health rapidly deteriorated. Charlotte realised that the hope for recovery had passed and that she must accept her sister's impending death.Within a day of consulting a doctor, Anne calmly took her last breath at the age of 29 with Charlotte and Ellen by her side. The contrast between Anne representing the light in the lives of her loved ones and her death representing the extinguishing of that light demonstrate how such a significant loss of a young sister can drastically change her loved ones' view of the world. One might have seen beauty and light in life when those endearing to one's heart were alive. But once they are gone, the world turns into a gloomy and 'benighted, tempest-tossed' place.
