A 61 year's old patient came at SQUARE HOSPITAL LTD Dhaka Bangladesh with known case of Ca. Oesophagus, Status: Post chemo and radiotherapy. during endoscopy we found ulcerated growth at 23cm from incisor of teeth. A large tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) / airway oesophageal fistula found at 35cm. The growth extends up to 30cm from incisor teeth. The lumen is partially narrowed at the site of the growth. we implanted a self-expanding covered metallic oesophageal stent (20mmX14cm) across the growth. A tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is an abnormal connection between these two tubes. As a result, swallowed liquids or food can be aspirated (inhaled) into patient lungs. Feeding into the stomach directly can also lead to reflux and aspiration of stomach acid and food. Malignant tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a serious complication of thoracic malignant diseases and is more common in esophageal cancer than in lung cancer. TEF sometimes results in aspiration pneumonia, sepsis, and malnutrition associated with trouble in eating. Tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEF) often occur with esophageal or bronchial carcinoma. Currently, we rely on implantation of delicate devices, such as self-expanding metallic stent in the esophagus to cover the fistula and expand the stenosis in order to relieve patient pain and other complications.
