(17 Jul 2014) Followers of the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr are continuing to arrive in the Iraqi city of Samarra to defend key Shiite shrines against attacks by Sunni militants. Footage shot by a freelance cameraman in and around the city on Tuesday showed truckloads of armed volunteers, who have joined a militia known as the al-Salam (meaning "peace") brigade. They intend to defend the al-Askari shrine from Sunni militants who have captured large swathes of territory in northern Iraq in recent weeks. Truckloads of armed volunteers, as well as flat-bed trucks bringing excavators and earthmovers, arrived in Samarra earlier this month. Some of the volunteers, including brigade commander Kadhim al-Isawi, paid their respects at the shrine on Tuesday. The al-Askari shrine contains the tombs of the 10th and 11th imams - Ali al-Hadi, who died in 868, and his son Hassan al-Askari, who died in 874. Both are descendants of the Prophet Muhammad, and Shiites consider them to be among his successors. The shrine was blown up in 2006 and is still under construction. Samarra is 95 kilometres (60 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad.
