The Vermilion Historic Society hosted guest presenter, lawyer, and cultural activist, WARREN PERRIN, who put forth much of the effort in obtaining the declaration of official apology by the British government for the deportation of the French Acadians from the Acadian region of Canada in 1755. In this presentation, Mr. Perrin gives the historical background on how and why the Acadiens (later known in Louisiana as “Cajuns”) were deported. Perrin launched a 13-year effort starting in 1990 to seek an apology from the Crown for actions taken on its behalf during the forceful expulsion of Acadian people from Nova Scotia and nearby settlements. He discusses the tremendous difficulty endured by the Acadians along with their ultimate survival and proliferation along the bayous and marshes of their new home in South Louisiana. He outlines his 13-year effort starting in 1990 to seek an apology from the Crown for actions taken on its behalf during the forceful expulsion of Acadian people from Nova Scotia and nearby settlements. This program took place in Abbeville, Louisiana on July 27, 2022, which was the day before the 19th anniversary of the Queen's ”Royal Proclamation and Day of Remembrance of the Deportation."
