Declan, a human marine, defeats three Veylari champions in the Grand Crucible. Supreme Commander Keldara claims him through the "Rite of conquest," making him her consort. She discovers he possesses ancient "Predecessor" neural implants, the same technology the Veylari Dominion's power is built upon, which the Empress sought to eliminate. To survive the Empress's assassination attempts and rigged tournament, Declan and Keldara activate his implants, giving him control over Veylari Predecessor systems. He uses this ability to win his first fight and disable a rival fleet. In the finale, Keldara draws the Empress's attention in the arena while Declan infiltrates the palace core to collapse the Empress's immortality field. Keldara executes the now-mortal Empress, and they rebuild the Dominion as equal partners, beginning the age of human-Veylari alliance.
