In the late 1960s and 1970s, Hebden Bridge, a quaint market town in West Yorkshire, underwent a remarkable transformation. As the textile industry declined, many houses became uninhabited, and the town was marked by soot, described by Ted Hughes as "this gloomy memorial of a valley" and "a gruesome dead-end tunnel." However, this downturn paved the way for a cultural renaissance. Bohemians and creatives from cities like Manchester, Leeds, and Bradford took advantage of the situation, moving in to squat the derelict properties. These newcomers, often labeled as 'hippies' by the locals, brought with them a spirit of resistance and a desire to break with convention. They embraced communal living, personal freedom, and alternative lifestyles, which resonated with the town's history of non-conformism and cooperative movements. The integration of these 'offcumdens'—a local term for outsiders—was not without challenges. However, their influence led to significant changes, revitalising the community and fostering a vibrant, diverse culture that Hebden Bridge is known for today. This film by Awakening Arts, directed by Geoff Brokate, delves into this pivotal era, featuring firsthand accounts from both the native residents and the 'hippies' who relocated to Hebden Bridge. Through their stories, we explore the dynamic interplay between tradition and change, and how a small town embraced a new identity shaped by the convergence of different cultures and ideals.
