The Island Institute supports the expansion of seaweed aquaculture along the coast of Maine by training prospective sea vegetable farmers through our Aquaculture Business Development program — giving them the resources and training it takes to apply for a license, seed and harvest a kelp farm. This program has supported 13 seaweed growers starting farms so far, and each year a new cohort is accepted into the program. In support of Maine seaweed market expansion, The Island Institute commissioned a seaweed market study as a consumer-focused investigation of sea vegetable preferences and developed a dozen scalable recipe prototypes to share with producers and processors.
