Stryker A1 Initial Maneuver Short-Range Air Defence (IM-SHORAD) Vehicle IM-SHORAD system is one of the Army’s solutions to replace the aging Avenger short-range air defense system. While the Avenger worked well in its day as a Cold War platform for the protection of Army units from close in air threats, the system is showing its age, being less survivable than other modern air defense systems, and requiring a long set up a time to get operational. The IM-SHORAD or Maneuver Short-Range Air Defence is built to bring a modernized package of capabilities to the table, and improve in the areas where Avenger struggles. IM-SHORAD system will provide the Army with improved capabilities for defense of formations and other tactical echelons from low altitude air attacks and surveillance. The 5-4 ADA will be the first unit to receive the IM-SHORAD system in Germany to replace its aging Humvee-mounted Avenger systems as said earlier. Further, it can keep up with the units they are protecting, with better armor and survivability than a HUMVEE platform provides. The system has its own radar and an array of weapons that can be effective against air threats without a long setup process. The Turret allows for different weapon configurations, including a pair of AGM-114L Longbow Hellfire missiles, capable of defeating air and ground targets, and four Raytheon’s Stinger man-portable air defense systems for engaging light armored air targets within a range of 4,800m. Stryker A1 Initial Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense (IM-SHORAD) system is being developed by General Dynamics Land Systems and Leonardo DRS for the US Army. A prototype of the IM-SHORAD vehicle was unveiled at the 2019 Annual Meeting & Exposition of the Association of the US Army (AUSA) held in Washington. The air defense platform is intended to provide air and missile defense against a range of low-altitude aerial threats such as rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, cruise missiles, as well as unmanned aerial systems.
