Greyfriars Kirkyard, the churchyard around Greyfriars Church, is world famous for many reasons. Greyfriars Bobby, with a fountain outside the churchyard and a grave right as you walk in was a Skye Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until he died on 14 January 1872. The story continues to be well known through books and films. Some of the tombstones have names recognized by Harry Potter fans the world over. JK Rowling apparently took inspiration for the character names Potter, Mad-Eye Moody, Tom Riddell, Mcgonogal and others from the tombstones in the churchyard. The back left corner of the cemetery is The Covenanters Prison, where covenanters were held (and some executed) until they signed an oath the King Charles I in 1679. The covenanters rejected the King's and Archbishop of Canterbury's notion that Scottish churches should adopt English church practices. The Covenant was signed in Greyfriar's Kirkyard. Many notable people have been buried in the churchyard and it is known as one of the most haunted places in Edinburgh and even in the world. It's much spookier at night but a lovely place for a stroll or even a rest during a sunny day. Come explore it with us! #Scotland #Edinburgh #GreyfriarsKirkyard
