What if in the notes played on a simple wire viola we could meet a landscape, a land, a people? Viola Campaniça is the Alentejo expression of the popular Portuguese viola, inseparable from the region after which it is named and from the social and cultural context where it emerged. The Campaniça, which accompanies songs, modas, dances, and religious festivals, has survived to the present day thanks to the effort of master players who, in the late twentieth century, passed their testimony on to new generations of musicians and researchers. Nowadays, this sonority, which is part of Alentejo's identity, lives on each time a musician discovers this instrument, embraces it and explores its possibilities, taking further traditional repertoire forms. Tó-Zé Bexiga, Pedro Mestre and Paulo Colaço are musicians with different backgrounds who share a passion for Viola Campaniça. They describe their relationship with this instrument that, in its material and expression, shows that music can also be a place.
