Script Many artists have their own style and devotion to their art, some even focusing on their identity and speaking out on issues that affect their own community. Richard Ray Whitman is an indigenous artist born in 1949 and grew up in Gypsy, Oklahoma and is a part of the Yuchi tribe. His art has revolved around cultural, political and aesthetic ideas. He is known as not just an artist but along with being a poet, actor, and activist. Whitman explores different mediums when he creates his work but began first as a painter. Whitman’s involvement with activism started with opposing the Vietnam War and supporting Civil Rights and Treaty Rights. He has used his creativity and skill to teach children art that ties into where they are from and who they are and to help with intergenerational trauma. His art brings awareness into issues such as Indigenous women who have gone missing or were murdered and have not gained any media coverage. Some artworks he has made include saturated colors and monochromatic tones. One of his works that is most commonly found online is, Do Indian Artists Go To Santa Fe When They Die? Made with offset lithograph was made in 1988. His work not only expresses creativity in different mediums but provides storytelling in different forms bringing awareness to issues not being spoken about enough.
