Deep in the woods of Talbot County, Georgia, lies the long-forgotten McKinney family cemetery. When a descendant of John McKinney reached out, hoping to locate his ancestors’ resting place, Cecil and I set out on a journey through time—guided only by historical accounts, old maps, and a lingering hope that the graves had survived decades of logging and change. Using details from William Davidson’s A Rockaway in Talbot, we narrowed our search to thousands of acres of timberland. John McKinney’s plantation home, once a grand Greek Revival structure, had vanished, leaving only brick piers as remnants of its past. The cemetery, described as lying nearby on a hill marked by cedar trees, had eluded previous searches—even those conducted during active logging operations. It seemed lost forever. But fate intervened. A simple note left on a gate led to a phone call, a hunter’s tip, and an unexpected breakthrough. What loggers and past researchers had missed, we finally found—hidden beneath layers of fallen leaves and time itself. Join us as we uncover and document the forgotten burial ground of the McKinney family, piecing together a story of early Talbot County settlers, lost cemeteries, and the fragile threads that connect us to the past. Some graves remain nameless, their markers long vanished. Others, like John McKinney and his wife Julia, were known to be buried here—but no headstones were visible. The survival of this site is nothing short of a miracle. What other cemeteries remain hidden, waiting to be found? This journey reminded me of my own ancestors’ lost graves and the hope that, with enough searching, their stories too might one day be uncovered.
