Central Asia, the former Soviet Republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, share borders with Russia, China, Iran and Afghanistan and have access to the Caspian Sea. They are in a strategic position but have long been in the shadow of their USSR history. Maps of Central Asia show the potential this region has for trade and security and the countries of Central Asia are rich in natural resources, such as gas, oil, rare earth metals. Is Russian culture still dominant there, do they speak Russian? Is the Turkic heritage of four of the countries important in their ties with Turkey? Does Tajikistan's Indo-European heritage link it closely with Afghanistan? Is the countries' Muslim religion an integrating factor or a threat? Does Central Asia have links to Afghanistan and Iran due to Islam? Has terrorism been a problem? The Crocus City Hall terrorist attack in Russia involved citizens of Central Asia. Is the C5+US, C5+Germany, C5+Turkey format a factor for the formal integration of Central Asia? Can Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kyrgyzstan's President Sadyr Japarov, Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon, Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamadow and Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev cooperate in the region?
