Various of gay rights activist being detained STORYLINE: Gay rights activists were attacked on Wednesday outside the State Duma as they protested against a controversial new bill banning "gay propaganda". Anti-gay activists threw eggs at the gay rights campaigners before scuffles broke out between the two sides. Several activists on both sides were detained by police. If adopted, the new law, gay rights activists believe, will violate the rights of members of the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) community in Russia. "It restricts the rights of seven million Russian citizens who belong to the LGBT community," said gay rights activist Reida Lin. Several Russian regions have already introduced anti-gay laws, but now the Duma wants to upgrade the legislation to a federal level. The adoption of the controversial bill has been adjourned at the last moment to January 22, and gay rights activists say they will continue to campaign against it.
