A playthrough of Hi Tech Expressions' 1993 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Harley's Humongous Adventure. Harley's Humongous Adventure. Wow, talk about something that could've only come out of the 1990s. It's a platformer starring a scientist who decides to take a starring role as not-Rick Moranis in "Honey, I Shrunk Myself." You play Harley, a scientist who has to find the parts to fix his shrinking ray in order to restore himself to his normal size. It was made by Visual Concepts, and it makes use of the same graphics techniques as we've seen in games like Claymates and ClayFighter: the sprites were created from digitized images of clay figures, and the results are impressive. The look is much more consistent than it was in Claymates, and it gives the game a unique aesthetic even when compared to other similar productions by the company. The game's levels remind me of games like Tom & Jerry or Micro Machines with the scale of the household environments, and though they're a bit bland looking, they don't distract from the cool enemy designs. I have no idea how to actually describe most of these creatures, but they are cool to look at and the personality put into their animations is one of the high points of the game. The boss is my absolute favorite bit, though. That poor rat. Each time you defeat him he becomes more and more disfigured as he replaces destroyed body parts with random objects. His final, Frankensteined visage is a pretty horrifying sight to behold. The gameplay itself is fine. The non-variable height jump can be a bit annoying, but overall the game's mechanics are consistent and fair, the controls are responsive, and the difficulty level is on the lower end of average, so if you find yourself looking for a light, fun SNES game that you can beat without weeks of practice, Harley gets the job done. And really, how can you not appreciate any game that gives its hero a jumping animation like what Harley has? He looks like he's cupping someone's butt cheeks! Or maybe jugs? Hahaha. _ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
