"Wild Bill Jones" has countless versions, but two of my favorites are by Nathan Bowles and Virgil Sanderson. This song was a major influence on my love for clawhammer banjo, and it's always a fan favorite. Want to dive deeper into this one? I'm teaching multiple versions over on Patreon right now, so check that out! Pretty Polly Next up, we get into the tragic tale of "Pretty Polly," a song that traces its origins back to the 1700s as the "Gosport Tragedy." This graphic song tells the story of a man's betrayal. Dock Boggs and Ralph Stanley have excellent versions of this tune, but I take inspiration from the Coon Creek Girls’ 1935 recording, played in sawmill tuning. It’s a faster, intense rendition that still carries the weight of the tale. Darling Cora This song blends themes of moonshine and murder. "Darling Cora" (or "Cory") has morphed over time, taking pieces from songs like "Little Maggie" and "The Gambling Man." I really recommend checking out arrangements from BF Shelton and Meredith Moon—both beautiful and unique The clawhammer banjo really shines here with its unique rhythms and haunting melodies. Little Sadie "Little Sadie" is a wild, fast-paced outlaw tune that later evolved into Johnny Cash's "Cocaine Blues." Played in sawmill tuning, this song is a blast to play and sing, with rapid-fire lyrics about a man on the run after committing a crime. It’s less graphic than some of the other murder ballads and a lot of fun to play In the Pines Lastly, we have "In the Pines," a haunting song popularized by Lead Belly and later Nirvana on MTV Unplugged. I like to play this one slow and sparse, evoking that eerie campfire storytelling vibe. It’s the perfect end to our murder ballad collection—dark, mysterious, and full of atmosphere. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next lesson! 🎶
