"Surgical Strategies for Stage IV Stomach Cancer" webinar w/ Drs. Klempner, Blakely, Badgwell & Woo

This is the entire inaugural web cast of HOPE's Web Cast Series. It was recorded live on November 7, 2020, and its topic was: "Surgical Strategies for Stage IV Stomach Cancer". Each panel discussion may alternatively be viewed individually. Links below. 0:09 Aki Smith, Founder and Executive Director of HOPE for Stomach Cancer, shares a little bit about her father's stage IV stomach cancer journey, and how it exemplifies the dire need for education when it comes to stomach cancer treatment options. Ms. Smith presents the webinar. 1:38 Twenty-seven-year-old patient, Lexy Patton, shares her stage IV stomach cancer journey, from the frightening results of her endoscopy, to her intense chemotherapy regimen with added immunotherapy, to her severe allergic reaction to chemo towards the end of her treatment, to finally receiving the good news that there was no longer evidence of disease. 7:17 Aki Smith presents Dr. Samuel Klempner, GI Medical Oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. 8:15 Samuel Klempner, M.D., discusses the role of medical oncologists in regional gastric cancer therapies with a focus on intraperitoneal chemotherapy, Hipec and Pipac. A brief anatomy lesson is then followed by a discussion on the roles of the medical oncologist. Finally, Dr. Klempner suggests some helpful questions to ask your team relevant when you’re considering regional therapies. In closing, doctors Yanghee Woo, M.D., Brian Badgwell, M.D., and Andrew Blakely, M.D., delve deeper into each of the specific approaches. This panel discussion can be viewed individually at:    • Regional Gastric Cancer Therapies with Sam...   21:43 Dr. Klempner introduces Andrew Blakely, MD, Program Director for the Surgical Oncology Research Fellowship at the Center for Cancer Research in Washington, D.C., who discusses catheter-based intraperitoneal chemotherapy and compares it to other IP treatment approaches. He also discusses the (open and recruiting) clinical trial taking place at the National Cancer Institute, potential future directions for this treatment approach, and the clinical need for improved treatment approaches in patients with gastric cancers. This panel discussion can be viewed individually at:    • Intraperitoneal (IP) Chemotherapy for Stag...   37:54 Dr. Klempner introduces Brian Badgwell, a surgical oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where he specializes in gastric cancer with a focus on treating the most common site of meta gastric cancer, which is the peritoneum. In his talk, Dr. Badgwell strives to provide a complete breakdown of the Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Perfusion with Chemotherapy (HIPEC) treatment, including its setup, the treatment's background, global clinical trials, and more, in a way that patients can understand so as to help them along their stomach cancer journey. Dr. Badgwell is also a professor at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, as well as Station Chief of the Gastric, Peritoneal, and Acute Care Surgical Oncology Department. This panel discussion can be viewed individually at:    • HIPEC 101 with Brian Badgwell, M.D.   55:56 Dr. Klempner introduces Yanghee Woo., M.D., Surgical Oncologist at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, California, who discusses how stomach cancer peritoneal carcinomatosis is adversely affecting adults under the age of 40, and how high the percentage is of Stage IV diagnoses in those young adults. Dr. Woo discusses treatment-resistant tumors in the peritoneum, which are particularly common in the 18-40 age group, and what to do about patients who are not initially surgically curable. Furthermore, she discusses the progress that the medical community has seen in Stage IV Stomach Cancer, as well as how historically poor outcomes are being overcome. Dr. Woo shines a light on the new world of stomach cancer treatment, why some patients don't qualify for clinical trials, and more, with an emphasis on PIPAC for Gastric Cancer Peritoneal Carcinomatosis. Dr. Woo is also the Co-Chair Medical Advisor of HOPE for Stomach Cancer, as well as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center. This panel discussion can be viewed individually at:    • PIPAC for Gastric Cancer with Yanghee Woo,...   1:19:46 Dr. Klempner begins the webcast's closing Q&A. He discusses with Yanghee Woo, M.D., Brian Badgwell, M.D., and Andrew Blakely, M.D., such questions as the optimal time in a patient’s journey to think about intraperitoneal (IP), bidirectional or PIPAC therapies; what duration of time patients should be off systemic chemotherapy before going to cytoreduction or IP; what long-term issues there are with IP therapies and whether consultation is advised regarding possible complications; the role of these regional therapies at stage two or three in order to reduce the development of stomach cancers; and more. 1:49:39 Ms. Smith closes the webinar. This web cast was recorded live on November 7, 2020.
